Torches were used to partially melt the surface of the ice so the blocks were bind when they refroze

Worked continued around the clock to get the Castle built in time

Kieth Soderbeck (in red) has worked on the last three Ice Castles.  He loves volunteering his time and is captivated by the beauty of the ice.  In fact, in 1986 he accidently drove off the road because he was watching the colors change as he drove by!

Unloading newly arrived ice blocks.

Many volunteers said that working with ice is actually more dangerous than working with brick and morter.
